Though the Babylonian creation story is much older than that of Israel, it is worth noting that the Biblical account of creation is paralleled in the Babylonian Enuma elish. It seems likely that the Biblical account of creation was taken from the Mesopotamian traditions. This account is found in the Epic of Gilgamesh and other Mesopotamian accounts. In fact, some scholars believe that the Biblical Genesis story originated in Mesopotamia before it was passed on to Israel.
Another area where the ancient Near Eastern parallels support the biblical account is in the understanding of the human figure. If the Biblical account was quoted or alluded to by these ancient writers, the literate authors of the Mesopotamian flood myths may have been using some of the same Greek terminology to describe the human figure. For instance, in Enuma elish the human figure is called “the wise One” (gibb.na nuzu), “the holy One” (su) and “the upright One” (ud). In the Gilgamesh epic the human figure is called “the man” (kipi), “the man-who-crawls” (kullu) and “the scion of a man” (pazu). The Akkadian word for “man” is used in the sense of “human being” (anakku). The use of these three words in other ancient Near Eastern accounts shows familiarity with this Greek concept of the human figure. Perhaps the Biblical author used the same words as well. Now, of course, we cannot be certain which of the two accounts is the original and which is the copy. Such an argument is purely speculative.
