The first is the popular anti-Communist individual biography. This is the stuff of fiction. Its basic tendency is to demystify and, in doing so, to reduce the Communism of individuals to something like irrational instinct. It is irresponsible, too, to reduce the Communists to a class of people, to an abstract collective, to a sub-human homogeneous entity, as if the CPGB and the Labour Party were the same thing. The second form, which I fear is on the increase, is the political biography which seeks to promote an individual as a leader or a policy-maker. This is one reason why the Soviet Union was so anti-liberal in its approach to the personality cult. Here there is certainly more influence on the individual than there would have been in the Soviet Union. But we should be cautious about identifying an individual with the Party, even in a negative way. The third and probably the most common form of biography is the descriptive, that is, the biography that seeks to define the individual and his career in terms of Party history and policies, and to show how the two are linked. This is the biography that seeks to show the influence of Party leadership on an individual and his career, often in terms of the influence of leaders on them. John Plummer's book is the most influential example of this type of biography, and with the exception of the Houghton essay on William Connor, it is also the most useless....
