912. (1) Salutes shall be exchanged between officers and enlisted mennot in a military formation, nor at drill, work, games, or mess, onevery occasion of their meeting, passing near or being addressed, theofficer junior in rank or the enlisted man saluting first.
(3) Officers and enlisted men will, render the prescribed salutes in amilitary manner, the officer junior in rank or the enlisted mensaluting first. When several officers in company are saluted allentitled to the salute shall return it.
919. (1) Commanders of detachments or other commands will saluteofficers of grades higher than the person commanding the unit by firstbringing the unit to attention and then saluting as required bysubparagraph (1), paragraph 913. If the person saluted is of a junioror equal grade, the unit need not be at attention in the exchange ofsalutes.
(p. 023) In every troop there should be at least one copy of theManual of the Ordnance Department entitled "Description and Rules forthe Management of the U. S. Magazine Rifle." This manual gives thename and a cut of every part of the rifle, explains its use, shows howto take the rifle apart and care for the same, and also gives muchother valuable and interesting information.
90. When the recruit has made fair progress in the instruction withoutarms, including that required by par. 53, he is taught the manual ofarms. Instruction without arms and that with arms alternate.
Third. In resuming the order from any position in the manual, themotion next to the last concludes with the butt of the rifle about 3inches from the ground, barrel to the rear, the left hand above andnear the right, steadying the rifle, (p. 068) fingers extended andjoined, forearm and wrist straight and inclining downward, all fingersof the right hand grasping the rifle. To complete the order, lower therifle gently to the ground with the right hand, drop the left quicklyby the side, and take the position of order arms. (Fig. 2.)
Fifth. The manual is taught at a halt and the movements are for thepurpose of instruction, divided into motions and executed in detail;in this case the command of execution determines the prompt executionof the first motion, and the commands, two, three, four, that of theother motions.
To execute the movements in detail, the instructor first cautions: Bythe numbers; all movement divided into motions are then executed asabove explained until he cautions: Without the numbers; or commandsmovements other than those in the manual of arms.
During instruction in the manual of the pistol given when dismountedwith intervals each trooper terminates the first execution of raisepistol by carrying his right foot 24 inches to the right and placinghis left hand in the position of his bridle hand. This position isthen retained until return pistol is executed, when the position ofattention is resumed.
At all other times when movements in the manual of the pistol areexecuted dismounted the left hand is raised to the position of thebridle hand whenever used to manipulate the mechanism and is thendropped again to the side.
252. The modifications of the dismounted manual, incident to, theemployment of the pistol mounted are explained in the correspondingparagraphs of the Manual of the Pistol, Dismounted (pars. 145-156).
225. The relative rank between officers of the Army and Navy is asfollows: General with admiral, lieutenant general with vice admiral,major general with rear admiral, brigadier general with commodore,[14]colonel with captain, lieutenant colonel with commander, major withlieutenant commander, captain with lieutenant, first lieutenant withlieutenant (junior grade), second lieutenant with ensign. (A. R. 12.)
The adjutant, when so directed, selects orderlies and color sentinelsas prescribed in the Manual of Interior Guard Duty and notifies thecommander of the guard of his selection. He may require a trooper tomove out of the rank and to dismount (p. 301) for a more minuteinspection. He also notifies the two senior noncommissioned officersto act as platoon leaders if there has been a division into platoons.If there be a junior officer of the guard, he takes post at the sametime as the senior, facing to the front 3 yards in front of the guideof the first platoon, and the senior of the two noncommissionedofficers acts and takes post as chief of the second platoon. Thejunior officer of the guard may be directed by the commander of theguard to assist in inspecting the guard.
860. If there be no officer of the guard the adjutant inspects theguard and during the inspection notifies the senior noncommissionedofficer to command the guard and the next two senior noncommissionedofficers to serve as platoon leaders. A noncommissioned officercommanding the guard takes the post of the officer of the guard, thenext senior noncommissioned officer the post of the junior officer ofthe guard.
The adjutant then commands POSTS, at which platoon leaders take theirposts 3 yards in front of the guides of their platoons, facing to thefront, and the commander of the guard takes post 6 yards in front ofthe leader of the center (right) platoon, facing to the front, and thefile closers resume their places 3 yards in rear of the rank. If therebe no junior officer of the guard, the commander of the guard takespost 3 yards in front of the center guide.
869. If another person entitled to a salute approaches, each commanderof the guard brings his own guard to attention if not already atattention. The senior commander of the two guards then commands: 1.Old and new guards, 2. Present, 3. SABER. The junior will salute atthe command "Present, Saber," given by the senior. After the salutehas been acknowledged the senior brings both guards to the "Carry,Saber."
The following abbreviations and signs are authorized for use on fieldmaps and sketches. For more elaborate map work the authorizedconventional signs as given in the manual of "Conventional Signs,United States Army Maps,"; are used.

(a) Sergeant major, regimental; sergeant major, senior grade,Coast Artillery Corps; (b) quartermaster sergeant, senior grade,Quartermaster Corps; master hospital sergeant, Medical Department;master engineer, senior grade, Corps of Engineers; master electrician,Coast Artillery Corps; master signal electrician; band leader; (c)hospital sergeant, Medical Department; master engineer, junior grade,Corps of Engineers; engineer, Coast Artillery Corps.
14 The grade of commodore ceased to exist as a grade on theactive list of the Navy of the United States on Mar. 3, 1899. Bysection 7 of the act of Mar. 3, 1899, the nine junior rear admiralsare authorized to receive the pay and allowances of a brigadiergeneral of the Army.
